and they were destroyed by the titanic, terrific metal monster's missile circus, a display of lights and sounds as wonderful as it was sickening. only you remain, you in your battered machine, itself damaged heavily from the cavalcade of multicolored explosions. but mounted still upon your broken second body is its real trick, the biggest honking laser this side of Luna. so lift your massive metal arm and bring the cannon down, over your shoulder. run all the calculations you can cram before the beast realizes that it has leftovers on its plate. pray to whatever deity is left to watch over you in this hell of our own creation - you will need all the blessings you can get. and before you flick the switches, the terror's weakest point in your crosshairs, remind yourself of what you have lost. dedicate this one to them, their constant companionship through thick and thin as long as they could bear it.
